DOWN TO EARTH CARBON (DTEC)

People first projects driving nature-based carbon capture

There is carbon capture opportunity in the hundreds of millions of hectares of former forests that lie degraded and unusable. But for the more than 2 billion people living in rural poverty, replanting tree covers for CC adaptation and mitigation must go hand in hand with higher sustainable agricultural yields. DTEC projects will include new regenerative agricultural initiatives.

For humanity to survive runaway climate change, rural farmers and Indigenous peoples must be empowered to escape from the vicious cycle of poverty that accounts for 15% of global emissions.

Core Mission & Principles

While open to doing all types of forest carbon and related clean energy projects (REDD+, IFM, fuel switch, improved charcoal and improved cookstoves) it is focussing its efforts on high impact Afforestation Reforestation (AR) projects:

  • that are led by strong CBOs and/or Indigenous governments.

  • that facilitate integration between small farmer and IP value chains.

  • that are integrated with and in support of new regenerative agriculture initiatives.

  • where the permanence of results is based on fair trade in payment for ecosystem services (PES) which leverage access to multiple important non carbon values.

  • where women provide essential leadership roles.

  • where building an enabling environment and inclusive government structures is a priority.

  • where inclusion of marginalized parts of society is an essential ingredient.

Meet Our Team

Down to Earth Carbon (DTEC) combines the formidable talents of two masters of their respective disciplines – international strategic partnership and common-sense project management. Joining them in 2022, an operations manager who combines those specialties.

John Kendall
John Kendall

COO

John is a Registered Professional Forester specializing in the development and application of climate adaptation protocols related to land use and forestry. The forest-based projects he developed have so far reduced or removed over 3 million TCO2e. Important co-benefits of these projects include improvements in ecosystem function and increased biodiversity, as well as major social benefits such as enhancing Indigenous cultural values and promoting more resilient rural communities by providing sustainable infrastructure.

Sebastien Chenard
Sebastien Chenard

CEO of Quebec Sister company, Carbone Terre a Terre

Sebastien leads in the operational planning and implementation our eastern Canadian projects that are delivered through our sister company, Carbone Terre a Terre, based in Levis, Quebec. As a former innovation manager for a large Quebec agricultural cooperative, Sebastien brings passion and in depth knowledge of regenerative agriculture to the major agroforestry afforestation reforestation revegetation pilot project called ARBRE, which is focussed on converting old fields to biodiverse sugar maple orchards.

Zanzibar Holdings

Zanzibar Holdings has proven its capacity to generate socially responsible climate benefits to scale.

  • Zanzibar has over the last 40 years developed a solid reputation as an innovator in the BC silviculture service sector.

  • Zanzibar has a proven track record in socially responsible environmental stewardship.
